Urban crime and livelihood implications among the motorcycle taxi riders in Dar Es Salaam City- Tanzania

The motorcycle taxi business is increasingly becoming one of the key livelihood strategies in urban settings Sub-Saharan Africa. However, crime against operators threatening subsector and jeopardizes riders. This study examines its implications on livelihoods riders Dar es Salaam Tanzania a bid to recommend for alleviating looming crime. Based qualitative design, data were collected using in-depth interviews, focus group discussion indirect observations with sample 100 taxi-riders. Thematic analysis was employed based five themes [aka assets] pre-determined from sustainable framework namely natural, physical, human, social financial assets. Findings show that has negatively impacted riders’ through erosion Accordingly, order alleviate crime, relevant authorities should devise well-defined mechanism sharing information, use technology such as GPRS system security cameras around city, ensure availability police prompt response incidence night patrols reliable contacts, provision education awareness Others are ensuring an effective, communication between among e.g. phones, WhatsApp groups, other media, ID cards by easy identification traceability whenever they fall victims
